This Monday at AMAA we have an amazing surprise for our AMAA family members,

Good friend, AMAA family member and frequent guest instructor Carlos Sapão will be here to guest teach Monday nights Brazilian/ Gracie Jiujitsu class. It’s free for all Andersons Martial Arts students and the class will be for all levels, from advanced students to complete beginners to the art.

About Sapão

Carlos 4th degree black belt with 31 years experience practicing, training, teaching and competing.

“I began jiu jitsu at age 6 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I accomplished many jiu jitsu titles in Brazil and internationally. Competing in adults divisions since age 13, I won my first major title at age 16 (Pan American Champion 1997- Blue Belt Adults division).  Since then I’ve competed for 20 years straight being known for my “impassable guard”.

I became a black belt at the young age of 21 yrs old.

Because I competed for so many years in the beginning of my career, I decided to share and become a full-time jiu jitsu teacher.

In 2009, I opened my first school in San Francisco, CA. focusing less on tournaments and more on community- spreading out the jiu jitsu knowledge and benefits for each individual to have a better living.

That’s when I came to realize the jiu jitsu I learned from the Gracie family is bigger than the competition scene and instead for the betterment of the people.

Currently, I am Head Instructor at CS Jiu Jitsu San Francisco and continue connecting jiu jitsu with communities across the globe. “

Titles and Accomplishments:

  • Too many to count.
  • They don’t matter anymore.
  • The picture is bigger, brighter, and with an endless journey of learning.

THE JUN FAN MARITAL ARTS

The JUN FAN MARTIAL ARTS is a compilation of training methods, attitudes, philosophies, combat techniques and concepts conceived, researched and compiled by the late BRUCE LEE (LEE JUN FAN) until 1973.

It was from this that JEET KUNE DO eventually evolved into what it is today.

While the base of BRUCE LEE’S JUN FAN METHOD was the Chinese Gung Fu system of Wing Chun which was developed by a female nun about 400 years ago and is considered to be one of the most sophisticated fighting methods to originate in China. Bruce Leeresearched and incorporated kicking methods from northern and southern Gung Fu systems, French Savate and Thai Boxing. He incorporated his hand methods from Wing Chun, Western Boxing, various Gung Fu systems and Western Fencing Grappling, locking and throwing (as you can see in the video below as just one examples of the art) are also integral parts of the JUN FAN METHOD.

This is a prime example of Jeet Kune Do (JKD) ‘ground portion’  taught in our advanced JKD class.

What to learn more? TRY A CLASS? Why not Sign Up For Our 3 Day FREE Trial and see what AMAA can do for your goals.

The JUN FAN METHOD is considered to be the explosive precursor to a JKD understanding; or, in other words, the base from which we work towards totality in personal combat.

The 10 Greatest Benefits of Training Martial Arts

Whether you’ve just embarked on your martial arts journey, or if you’ve been training for awhile,  we know that martial arts has already inspired you.

Whichever way martial arts influences you, inspires you and makes you smile in the middle of a hectic week – martial artists are happy and often very successful and fulfilled people.

The 10 Commandments Of Training Martial Arts

1) You learn to commit yourself

Once you make the decision to start training, it’s important to stay focused and committed – even in the face of challenges. It’s not always going to be easy, and there will definitely be days when you feel unmotivated. That’s why it’s so important for you to press on and stay dedicated, so as to grow and progress.

2) You learn to give 100%

When you train correctly, at the right Academy, you learn how to train wholeheartedly.

The more you train martial arts, the better you become at focusing on your goals. You know that hard work and discipline will help you achieve your goals faster, and martial arts helps you establish discipline in countless other areas of your life.

You become so used to goal setting and staying focused at training, doing the same at work personal life or school becomes easier. Martial arts helps you realize what it takes to accomplish a task and you’ll stop at nothing till you’ve completed it.

3) You learn to smile, relax and have fun

It is honestly crazy much more relaxed you become about everything in your life once you start training martial arts. You learn to have less fear when trying new things. And you learn to take things lightly, understanding that mastery takes a time, you begin to find deep joy and pride in the small accomplishments you reach every day on the training floor.

Plus, this mentality truly seeps into every other part of your life – from the most difficult days to the most fun, martial arts teaches you to find the small victories and smile.

4) You learn (a ton) about your bodies capacity

In order to maximize your performance on the training floor, you have to form a relationship with your body. As you begin to train martial arts this actually happens naturally. You also begin to identify exactly what your body is capable of, and you learn to use that in every way; from living a healthier life, to making strong and positive decisions in your everyday life.

5) You learn a ton (ton) about your mind and your brain capacity

It’s no secret that those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Martial arts teaches you to plan and how to see things in a strategic way. It also helps to fortify your mind and your body and as one unit, making you a stronger and more capable person in every way, every day of your life.

6) You learn how to get better – every day

If you just get better 1% every day, a hundreds days later you will be 100% better. This is something that martial arts will teach you over and over again. And, this perspective will find its way into everything you do, from personal goals, to professional goals, family and yes, of course your training and ability both physically and mentally.

7) You learn to stay connected to your goals (no matter what)

The Dalai Lama says that happiness lives in discipline. If you think about it, or do your research you will understand how true that statement really is. Martial arts teaches you discipline – how to find it, establish it and how to maintain it. It also teaches you how to prioritize your discipline to the things you need and value most.

8) You learn to look at things in perspective

Perspective is key to life. It keep you open minded, calm and it keeps you on your goals. In martial arts, a deep perspective is translated to the student daily; you learn to see the value in things you may have missed before. You learn to look at the big picture. You learn to relax and learn and take in the world. You learn to take set backs as minor speed bumps and accomplishments as building blocks. And yes, that education goes right into every part of your life – not just your martial arts development.

9) You learn the value of setting short-term and long-term goals

martial arts training emphasizes daily just how important it is to set goals – be it mastering that challenging technique or simply making it to class 2-3x a week. You learn through these goals to stay motivated and also be less likely to lose your focus along the way. You also learn to be both patient and  realistic with yourself.

10) You learn to look at the small things (and appreciate them) as much as the big things

Whether it’s a healthier lifestyle, more daily endurance, a quicker and more patient mind, a blackbelt or that lucrative Brazilain JiuJitsu stripe, you learn to be proud of yourself! Small victories ultimately add up, and lead to bigger things and then to huge milestones and successes. through martial arts you learn never to write off your accomplishments, no matter how tiny they might seem. By celebrating all your victories along the way, you’d have a more rewarding journey and of course, be more determined to set and accomplish new goals. Leading by examples in your family, in your community and inside yourself and your Academy – and example for new students just starting their journey.

Anderson Martial Arts Academy and Sifu Anderson would like to Congratulate 6 very deserving instructors that have now also been recommended and recognized by Guro Dan Inosanto —

  • Pablo Vasquez
  • Gerald Mark Sotto
  • Chuck Figueroa
  • Darren Assante
  • Alex Paik
  • Henry Watkins

Sifu Anderson could not be more proud of all of you, and he has no doubt that you will uphold the standards set forth by for himself and Guro Inosanto and also evolve and grow even further in your abilities and skills.

You all have worked hard for this and you deserve this and have earned it with your trust, your dedication and your passion and loyalty.

From Simo Anderson,

After and incredible 4 days at Instructor Camp in LA, with 6 more recommended AMAA instructors getting knighted by Guro Dan Inosanto, (14 total now -directly and indirectly- from under my husbands wings) I came away with this…

Through the years I have first hand seen the ability of martial arts to bridge divides, open minds, unlock hearts, unleash courage, heal wounds, and most importantly unite. Martial arts has the incredible ability to bridge the gab between generations and to grow and enhance a community.

In the past decade and a half at AMAA I have seen students have impactful experiences, some singular to an art or a day or a moment, and others more broad and compelling –
Yet somehow, in a busy world we do not stop often enough to consider the years and decades of education, experimentation, bravery, and a complex network of both honed in skill, confidence and nerve our teachers and predecessors have had in order to bring to us something so complete.

Furthermore, the bravery they had to not only give it to us, but to bring it out of us. To build us and guide us. To allow us such freedom in our education and such confidence and ability and in our skill.

Both directly (by way of educating, building their skill and recommending) and indirectly (by way of educating and building their skill) my husband has made 14 instructors under Guro Dan Inosanto (with little argument one of the most prestigious and recognized credentials in all martial arts IAMA).

Only myself and a few trusted people know what it took for him (our Sifu) to acquire the skill and trust under Guro and many others, and to then bring this information to his Academy and what it took (heart and soul) to instill it to his students and fighters and AMAA instructors and blackbelts.

Similarly only a few people know what it took for Guro Dan Inosanto to research, systemize and develop and bring forth the curriculums and knowledge and the arts that so many take for granted now — where do all of you Muay Thai, BJJ, Kali, Krav Maga, MMA (and so on) practitioners think it all came from?
These are the journeys, efforts, risks they took that (too) often go untold and unmentioned and unacknowledged.

There has always been and will undoubtably always be an urgency in the hope for change – for further evolution, for self fulfillment and joy, for growth and ability. And yet in this universal hope, so much goes unmentioned, taken for granted, as if it is owed to you — however it isn’t owed to anyone.

As I congratulate all 13 of the individuals that grew into their ability, knowledge and skill at Andersons Martal arts Academy (and so many others – you know who you are), and as I equally praise all of the incredible Inosanto Academy representatives around the world, many of whom I look up to — I urge all of us, to never stop giving credit to the people that paved our roads bare handed, optimistic, passionate and hopeful for us.

Thank you Guro Dan Inosanto and Sifu Dan Anderson
Congratulations my brothers and sisters (some pictured and some not) –
and all of our students and past students who were touched, mention it or not by what Sifu Anderson has brought into your life.
(and a personal special thanks to Cookie Vassiliou for my ‘second’ recommendation/ leap of faith from you two years ago. You’re one of my additional guiding lights for sure!)

Simo Anderson
